Liverpool have a fantastic record in the UEFA Champions League especially in the home legs. In Madrid a fortnight ago Liverpool scored the first goal and dominated large parts of the game. It was always going to be a tall order however and Madrid score and equaliser late on to salvage the match. A win here for either side would pretty much guarantee qualification to the knockout stage.
Liverpool this season have showed the form of potential Premier League champions and have had their best start to a domestic campaign in years. They have gained the ability to come back from large deficits and have consistently ground out victories in the dying minutes of games. In La Liga Athletico Madrid have not managed a victory in their last 4 matches. They sit in 10th place with a relatively tough match next weekend at home Mallorca who are two places above them.
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is unlikely to feature against his former club as he is still out with a ham string injury. This should not be the deciding factor though. Liverpool toppled Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend ending Chelsea’s unbelievable run and Torres did not play.
