After their worst defeat in the Scolari era can Chelsea hold on to their top spot?

Chelsea’s performance against Roma mid week was very poor indeed. They dominated possession throughout the game and still lost by 3 goals to 1. Roma got it right defensively and were devastating on the counter attack. The defeat was down to the very first goal. A mistake from the entire back line allowed Roma to edge in front. This gave them the confidence to go on and win the match. If this mistake had not occurred the outcome could have been very different.

This match should have little effect on Sunday’s fixture against Blackburn. Scolari will have been appalled by his teams performance and will ensure that this does not span over to the weekend. Chelsea’s league form of late has been second to none. They have sustained a single defeat to Liverpool this season and have accuired the goal scoring ability that has long eluded them. Despite the Champions League defeat in Rome their previous fixture was won by 5 goals to 0.

 This match is very important indeed. With Liverpool and Manchester United hot on their heels a win is a must at Ewood Park. Chelsea a missing one or two players but not in key positions for this match. Chelsea has perhaps the greatest depth in the Premier League and will have no issue with this. Dider Drogba has returned to fitness and at present is not in Scolari’s starting 11. He will play at some point in the match and will be looking to win back his position in the first team.

Blackburn will be without Dunn and Reid and most importantly Santa Cruz. Blackburn have not won a game in their last 5 matches and beating top of the league Chelsea this weekend will be a tall order.

The price of the Chelsea win is a little short at 1.55 but will be worth a punt as it reaches the 1.8 mark.
