This match is the 2nd televised match of the 2008 /2009 opening day. Liverpool travel to the Stadium of Light with a lighter coach load to last season. Manager Rafa Benitez has had a good clear out during the summer break and for the better. Roy Keane’s Sunderland side has seen a host of new summer signings including the likes of Steed Malbranque, Pascal Chimbona and El Hadji Diouf which does make the team sheet look more like that of a club from the English top flight. It is fully expected that Keane’s Sunderland will improve on last seasons league position but it will take time for these new signings to gel as a team.
Liverpool will be too much for Sunderland this weekend as their new signings find their feet. Expect Fernando Torres to be too much for the home side’s back line and he will more than likely begin this seasons goal tally. Liverpool new signing Roy Keane will be looking to make a name for himself with Liverpool and will desperately want his first Premiership goal playing in red.
Sunderland will not be so dangerous in front of goal. Kenwyne Jones will not feature in Saturday’s opener due to injury and El Hadji Diouf will take time to settle in. His goal tally was far what was expected of him last season at Bolton. Sunderland will have a good season but it will not start this weekend.
