Will Chelsea redeem themselves after their hiccup against FC Cluj?
On Wednesday night Chelsea play against AS Roma. In the last round of the competition Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw against FC Cluj whilst Roma came from a goal down to beat Bordeaux by 3-1. Chelsea began the group as hot favourites to win this group and are so far enjoying a top class season.
Chelsea are of course hot favourites for this match. The key factor here is that the tie is at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea’s record speaks for itself. In recent seasons none of the Itlaian sides travel well to England. Roma themselves suffered a 7-1 defeat to Manchester United a few seasons back in a game that was predicted to be tight.
Looking at form Chelsea collected a 5-0 win this weekend against Middlesbrough playing with a half strength squad. Roma had a much harder task in-front of them in the form of Inter Milan sustained a 3-0 defeat on home turf.
For the Champions League clash Scolari will have a much fuller squad list in which to make his selections from. Ashley Cole, Joe Cole and skipper John Terry are all expected to return to duty.
Looking at each domestic league Chelsea are in a comfortable position at the top of the table claiming 20 points out of a possible 24. Important to note is that 2 of the 4 points were dropped to Manchester United which is nothing to be ashamed of. Roma on the other hand are having the worst start to the season they have had in the last decade. They currently sit in 14th position and have their work cut out for them if they want to play Champions League football next season. Roma’s domestic issues will be more important to them at the moment rather than their antics in Europe.
