Arsenal 2 Reading 0
Arsenal keep a firm grip on the Premiership number 3 spot with a 2-0 win over Reading at the Emirates. The game had greater importance for Steve Coppell’s Reading as they started the day just 3 points clear of the drop zone. The 2 sides have met 8 times in their history and Arsenal have been victorious in all 8 meetings. Today’s visit would only add to this tally.
The first goal was a long time coming but on 30 minutes Emmanuel Adebayor got himself into a 1 on 1 position with Marcus Hahnemann and slotted it home.
8 minutes later Gilberto’s drive was deflected off Andre Bikey into the top left corner. Arsenal enter the break 2-0 in front.
There were no further goals in the second half however Robin van Persie came close from a free kick. The clean strike crashed into the underside of the cross bar and then hit the post. That would have been his first goal at the Emirates since October. Cesc Fabregas had a shot cleared off the line by Michael Duberry.
Jens Lehmann has very little to do in this game and the fight for survival goes on for Reading.
