Aston Villa 0 Wigan 2

Wigan Athletic are granted a position in the English Premier League next season with two 2nd half goals from Antonio Valencia.

A game with importance for both sides as Aston Villa remain in 2nd position behind Everton in the race for Europe and Wigan new that a win today at Villa Park would guarantee their Premiership status of next season.

In the first half both sides had their chances. Villa edged the possession but could not put themselves in front. Martin O’neil’s men pushed for the opened but were denied by some quality play by Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland. He denied some good opportunities from both Zat Knight and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

On 52 minutes Antonio Valencia put the relegation strugglers in front scoring only his 2nd goal in 29 previous appearances for his side, scored off a deflected shot. Today was clearly his day when just 10 minutes later running at the Villa defence and his a powerful shot unstoppable for Villa keeper Scott Carson.

Wigan fans celebrate as they survive for another year.
