Birmingham 2 Liverpool 2

Birmingham throw away a 2 goal lead in their relegation battle at St Andrews.

It seems a place in the Champions League final is on the minds of Rapha Benitez and the Livepool squad. Alex McLeish’s Birmingham side would have known that they have a good chance of a win today due to players being rested for Liverpool’s Wednesday night encounter with Chelsea.

There were not many chances to either side in the first half but on 34 minutes Mikael Forssell broke free of the Liverpool defence, got into space and shot it past Pool keeper Jose Reina.

Birmingham came out at the start of the second half with the same hunger. Sebastian Larsson struck the perfect free kick to double the home side’s lead. Things were looking too easy for Blues however only 8 minutes later they had a reality check as Peter Crouch hit the ball hard and low to claim one back. Birmingham then sat back and Liverpool picked up the pace posing more more threat as the match went on. Yossi Benayoun scored the equaliser on 76 minutes with a header that deflected off Birmingham defended Radhi Jaidi. Disappointment showed in the Birmingham and Liverpool pushed for the winner but it was not to be.

Final score Birmingham 2 Liverpool 2.
