An unpredictable tournament sees a more predictable final as Pompey beat Cardiff by a goal to nil at Wembley.

This tournament has produce more shock results than any other in recent times. 2008 has seen giant killing after giant killing, most notably Barnsley victories over both Liverpool and Chelsea.

Portsmouth started the day stong favourites and it was clear that Harry Redknapp put the league to one side to focus on this competition quite a while ago. With the competition dominated by the big 4 for so many years 2008 would see a new winner. Cardiff boss Dave Jones decided against the start of Robbie Fowler who is still recovering from Surgery.

Portsmouth controlled the match and Kanu missed a sitter early on in the first half. The nerves showed in the face of the Pompey boss as the ball was drilled wide. On 37 minutes Nwankwo Kanu got a second opportunity and this time found the back of the net from close range. Just before half time Glenn Loovens put home a corner only to see it disallowed fr hand ball.

Portsmouth had a nervy second half but with Sol Campbell and in form keeper David James protecting the Portsmouth goal Cardiff did not really look like finding the equaliser. Glenn Loovens came close again this time with his head but it was not to be. Cardiff have been the host of this competition for the last few years but they will not be going home with the trophy today.

Final score Cardiff 0 Portsmouth 1.
