Chelsea fall at the last hurdle as news from Old Trafford filters to the Bridge.
With their recent win over Manchester United the title race would go down to the wire. With a far superior goal differences Avram Grant knew that realistically Wigan would need to get a result against the reds for Chelsea to stand a chance of becoming champions.
Chelsea had a much more nervy start than United and as news of the first Manchester United goal filtered through to Stamford Bridge the blues went in for the break goalless. The odds were stacking up against Chelsea and they knew that the United score line is irrelevant if they did not pull out a result themselves.
On 62 minutes Andriy Shevchenko found the bank of the net from close range. The score remained the same for the best part of half an hour and Chelsea fans prayed for good news form the JJB Stadium. 10 minutes before the end of the season there was news from Wigan but it was not good. Ryan Giggs had put United 2 infront and effectively ended the season for Chelsea. As word got round Chelsea crumbled and on 90 minutes conceded an equalising goal by Kevin Davies.
So close but yet so far. Chelsea will seek revenge at the Champions League final in Moscow.
Final score Chelsea 1 Bolton 1.
