Jermaine Defoe opened up the scoring. Peter Crouch did the job he was bought for heading down a cross into the path of Defoe who slotted it low past keeper Tim Howard. Glen Johnson made it 2-0 before the break, setup beautifully by Defoe and in the second half it was Peter Crouch that made it 3 scoring his first goal for Portsmouth.
Everton were kept out by a superb performance by David James and Yakubu missed a penalty late on.
