Newcastle win today’s northern derby and ensure Premiership football at St James’ Park next season.Newcastle are now safe for this season but the fight goes on for Sunderland. The Magpies began strong and dominated most of the first half and it was just 4 minutes in when captain Michael Owen put the home side in front heading in a cross from Geremi.
Sunderland started to pick up the pace a little but just before half time Higginbotham handled a one two ball from Owen to Viduka handing Newcastle a spot kick. Michael Owen stepped up to take it and increased the lead to 2-0 beating sunderland keeper Harper.
The second half was much of the same and at full time the score remained 2-0. Kevin Keegan claiming his first derby victory since his return to Newcastle.
