Aston Villa currently top group F and can qualify with a home victory against Zilinia on Thursday night. The last round saw the Villains grind out a 1-0 away victory against Slavia Praha. A couple of weeks back Villa got the opportunity to rub shoulders with the big boys. A 2-0 victory over Arsenal saw them sitting in the Premier League 4th spot.

Their form has slipped a little of late and the issue is with goals. Villa have only score a single goal in their last 3 matches and have had 2 nil nil draws on the bounce. Spain crush the Russians to book their place in the Euro 2008 final.It took Spain a while to find their feet before displaying total dominance. The first half ended goalless and it was on 49 minutes that Xavi broke the deadlock. Dani Guize followed up to score the 2nd putting the match seemingly out of reach of the Russians and it was David Silva who finished the match off with Spain’s 3rd.

Pavlyuchenko put the Russians in front on 56 minutes and the Dutch battled hard to equalise. Van Nistelrooy leveled up on 86 minutes. The Russians dominated the extra time period. Torbinski put them in front on 22 mins et and Arshavin killed the game of on 26.

Turkey come from a 2-0 deficit to book their place in the knock out stages.

Without a shadow of a doubt this was the best game of the tournament so far. Turkey seemed down and out as the fell 2 behind with goals from Jan Koller and Jaroslav Plasil. With 15 minutes to go and a fumble by Petr Cech Turkey fired home 3 to win the match and steal qualification from the Czech Republic. The goals were score by Arda Turan and Nihat Kahveci.

Italy’s chances of qualification look bleak and Romania just miss out on Victory.

Romania were supposed to be the side that all teams would get 3 points from in the group of death but they have showed that they are contenders like everyone else. The first half ended goalless but on 57 minutes ex Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu put the Romanians in front. The celebrations however were to last no more than a minute as on 58 minutes Christian Panucci equalised. The Romanians then dominated the rest of the game. On 81 minutes Romania were awarded a penalty. Mutu stepped up but was denied by a fantastic safe by Buffon. Group C remains completely open.

Austria 1 Poland 1

The hosts hang on to their place in the tournament by the skin of their teeth.Roger Guerreiro put Poland in front on 30 minutes and Austria then played their hearts out to get a result. On 90 minutes their chance came. They were awarded a penalty for a pull in the box and Ivica Vastic stepped up to take it. He leveled the score and earned a well derved result for Austria.

It was Ronaldo that created their 3rd when he broke free from the Czech backline and as Petr Cech committed he layed the ball off for Ricardo Quaresma to finish.

The biggest game of the competition so far sees the reigning World Cup champions smashed.

Netherlands got their campaign off to a flying start with a 3-0 battering of Italy. The game was expected to be close but nobody would have predicted that scoreline. Ruud van Nistelrooy opened the scoring with a controversial goal. He was deemed offside but Italy had one player who was behind their goal and the goal was given.

Wesley Sneijder made it 2 late on in the first half and Giovanni van Bronckhorst completed the mission on 79 minutes.

An injury plagued under par France team are held by Romania.

With both Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira both missing there was always a shadow of doubt cast over the match favourites. The game saw few chances and provided little in the way of entertainment. Frank Ribery played well but chances lead to nothing. France must now achieve good results against both Italy and the Netherlands to stand any chance of escaping the group of death.
