The game took a turn however when mid way through the first half Wayne Rooney was brought down in the box to award United a penalty kick. Christiano Ronaldo stepped up to the spot and unlike at the Camp Nou he did not let the pressure get him and fired the ball into the back of the net.

This goal put the pressure on Chelsea as they went in for the half time break with their game goal less. 10 minutes from time Wayne Rooney put a through ball to substitute Ryan Giggs who beat Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland and effectively sealed the title race. News filtered through to Stamford Bridge and the news forced Chelsea to crack. Straight after Bolton scored the equaliser giving United a 2 point gap at the top of the table.
